Don't Just Read This

How I Want To Follow Jesus

In my dreams, I live in a rustic cabin overlooking a forested valley. There’s a bubbling brook, rows of hydrangeas, and a clearing where elk, deer, and friendly bears smile for my camera. DoorDash drivers bring a steady supply of organic food and artisan, chef-curated meals. As I contemplate the beauty of God’s Creation, read my Bible, and think divine thoughts, I am happy.

In this perfect world, there is no need to stay up late helping a teenager with their school project, stand in the hot sun at community service events, or give away uncomfortable amounts of money. I never have to let an undeserving driver cut in front of me in traffic, talk to a neighbor who voted for the wrong person, or forgive someone who hurt me.

When I read the Bible and imagine devoting myself to God in this paradise, I think of myself as a spiritually good person.

But James disagrees!

James 1:22

But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

What I’m Hearing

According to James, hearing God’s words without practicing them is spiritually dangerous.

Our problem is that it’s easy to feel spiritual without being like Christ.

It’s easier to read and write about sacrificial love than to, you know, sacrificially love.

It’s more enjoyable to listen to an entertaining sermon than to give away money I’d rather keep.

Consider all the Christians you know. Do you respect those who know a lot about the Bible, or those who have a track record of putting it into practice?

Every time we open the Bible, God wants us to come with a heart that’s ready to apply what he shows us.

For Your Reflection:

Take some time to meditate on James 1:22 in God’s presence.

Personally: In your heart, what explains the gap between hearing and doing God’s Word?

Discuss with a friend: What’s one thing God wants you to do, that you don’t want to do?

Connect with God: God, give me the strength to take one small step to obey you.

This Week:

Identify one extremely small action you can take to do God’s word.
